Amp Your Innovation With Who Not How!
Patrick Dougherty is an artist who works with sticks. Last week I experienced his installation "Windswept" at the BYU Museum of Art.
The artist took three weeks to complete the creation. Key to his success was the help of over one hundred students and volunteers.
He had the vision of WHAT he was after and WHY he was doing it. This enabled him to convey the impact of the project and enlist over 100 "WHOs" that made the "HOW" possible.
Fashioning a semi-trailer full of willow saplings to evoke the massive scale of nearby mountains would not have been possible in 3 weeks as a solo effort.
What impactful project are you holding onto or procrastinating that could be amplified and accelerated by finding some "whos" to help with the "how"?

Leadership Under Pressure
This week I saw a great leadership talk by Mark Pope, now head basketball coach at BYU. In 1998, he was on the Indiana Pacers under Larry Bird as they played in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls.
In his talk, Pope showed footage of the last 10 seconds of Game 4. We see the Pacers down by 1 (94-93) with 2.9 seconds on the clock. Getting free for the inbound pass, McKey makes a 3 pointer (watch from about 8:30) taking the Pacers to a 96-94 lead leaving 0.4 seconds on the clock!
The crowd goes wild! The game is over... right? Just look at Larry Bird (watch this 30 second video that stays on Bird during the pandemonium). He knows there's still enough time left on the clock for the Bulls to get another shot off, and he stays focused!
In fact, Jordan did get a shot off before the buzzer and it looped the rim before bouncing out... Close one!
Leadership lesson: Keep your cool! Stay focused so you can lead with power across the finish line! Celebrate when the victory is sure!
Please drop me a note or leave a comment. What's your favorite "traction point"? What do you want more or less of?
Be great this week!
