The Perfect Lap … Can You See It?
Last night I watched a great movie…Ford vs. Ferrari. There’s this amazing scene where Ken Miles takes his son, Pete, for a ride on the test track and then stops the car … both of them getting out and walking the track together. Here’s how the conversation goes:
Ken: You see that crack? That’s my marker for turn 8 …
Pete: What … to slow down?
Ken: Uhh … brush the breaks and downshift…
Pete: But you’ll be going 150 miles per hour!
Pete: So how do you see it?
Ken: You’re going fast… but as the car speeds up everything else slows down. You don’t do THAT (bringing hands up to sides of eyes like blinders). You do THIS (opening hands wide to the side of face and then outstretching arms), right? … And then you see everything.
Pete: Do you set other markers?
Ken: Indeed, I do. Lots of ‘em…
Pete: Yeah … ‘cuz you can’t just push the car hard the whole way, right?
Ken: That’s right, you have to be kind to the car… You feel the poor thing groaning underneath you. If you’re going to push a piece of machinery to the limit… and expect it to hold together… you have to have some sense of where that limit is.
Look out there. Out there is the perfect lap. No mistakes… Every gear change … Every corner … Perfect. You see it?
Pete: I think so…
Ken: Most people can’t. Most people don’t even know it’s out there. But it is… It’s there.
This scene is filled with some great parallels to the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS):-
Markers on the Track
Ken’s markers on the track are like his Proven Process. He’s using markers to stay “on track”. At every moment, he knows what’s coming, and what to do next. He optimizes his performance by getting the “moments of truth” in the journey right – every time!
When you’re going 150 MPH, how can you “see everything” and not lose focus? You must know what you’re looking for! You see these things in your business by having great Level 10 meetings … Looking at your Scorecard, Rocks, Customer and Employee headlines, To Dos, and managing your Issues List with powerful IDS (Identify, Discuss, Solve) methodology.
Where’s the limit?
When you push your business to the limit, do you “feel the poor thing groaning underneath you?” If you expect it to hold together you need to look at the data! When you establish measurable numbers for each member of the team and you review your Scorecard each week in your Level 10 Meeting, you get a sense for “where the limit is.”
The Perfect Lap
In this scene, Ken shows the power of Vision. Like a 10-Year Target, 3-Year Picture, and 1-Year Plan, Ken could see it! He knew where he was going and how he planned to get there. Great execution of gear changes and corners are like Rocks. When you get all of them “done” you’ve got a perfect lap … You’ve fulfilled your 1-Year Plan! Lap after lap, you hit your 3-Year Picture, and hitting your 10-Year Target is like winning the race!
We find lots of other EOS parallels in the movie.
The way Carroll Shelby…
- got the vision “shared by all”
- ensured he had the right people in the right seats, especially the driver’s seat!
- identified, discussed, and solved issues like aerodynamics and braking
Winning the Race
In order to win the race, you have to be kind to the car! Feel the car under you in your L10 Meetings. Know the limits with your Scorecard. Know the markers on the track with your Proven Process. Execute the perfect lap with Rocks and your 1-Year Plan. Win the race with the vision that’s shared by all in your Vision / Traction Organizer (V/TO), especially your 10-Year Target and 3-Year Picture.
Can you see it for your business?
“Most people can’t. Most people don’t even know it’s out there. But it is … It’s there!”
