Humble Confidence … Part of your “Level 5” Leadership…
One of our core values at Traction Point states:
We gratefully stand on the shoulders of giants and leverage our proven process!
At first glance, it may feel strange, or even surprising, to see the words humble and confident together in a single description. How can you be humble and confident at the same time?
Jim Collins on Humble Confidence and Level-5 Leadership
First, to get a handle on how Humble Confidence can be attributes of the same person, consider this description from a video of Jim Collins talking about humility as a characteristic of a “Level-5” Leader:
The X – Factor of truly great leadership is humility. Humility, combined with a ferocious will for something bigger than yourself.
Humility in a very special way! I want to be very clear; these people are ambitious. They have tremendous energy. They are often exhausting; they never want to stop, they’re utterly relentless…
But here’s the difference between a (level) five versus a four. For a Four, all that energy and ambition and drive is about them. It’s about what they get. It’s about how they look. It’s about what they make. It’s about what accrues to them. It’s about whether they are the center. That’s a four.
For a five, that same level of energy and drive and ambition is channeled outward into a cause, into a company, into a culture, into a quest! Into something that is bigger and more enduring than they are. Level fives lead in a spirit of service. And they subsume themselves and sacrifice for that.
What I’m Ferocious About
The “ferocious will” I have for something bigger than myself is this: By 2030 I will help one hundred companies to run their businesses so well that they are “crushing” their goals! They are achieving their visions and creating the kind of success that positively impacts one million people! Happy customers getting great value. Employees and their families enjoying growth, fulfillment, and good compensation. Founders and leaders who set out with big, bold visions … achieve them, and are enjoying the freedom of time, money, relationships and purpose!
A Model That Connects All Business Know-How
When I first encountered the EOS Model, I had what I would describe as a sense of relief. I was relieved that finally I had a simple framework upon which to hang all the business learning and theory I had studied and used over the past two and a half decades. A visual came into my mind of the EOS Model in the center surrounded with more than 100 books that have been meaningful in my business education. I could see connections from all of them to the Core Components of The EOS Model and the Tools and Disciplines used to strengthen each component. This gives me confidence that the answers to any business challenge are there. And since they are all tied to a simple model, the answers are comprehensible and easy to apply in the right place at the right time.
Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
Over three decades of business experience, I’ve developed some confidence in the things I know about running a great business. My confidence is bolstered as I observe the business results in the companies I’m helping, and thousands of others I hear about who have implemented EOS tools and disciplines to transform their businesses.
I’m also confident that every great business book that comes out this year, and the next … for decades to come, will connect to the framework we call The EOS Model. I can “stand on the shoulders of giants” (business leaders, researchers, authors, etc.) without frantically jumping from one giant’s shoulders to the next. By understanding the core components of the EOS Model, it is as if the giants are gathered in a few groups to hold me up and boost me to greater heights in each of the Core Components of my business.
Let’s consider what the words confident and humble really mean…
Here’s the Oxford Dictionary definition of Humble:
having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance
Here’s the Oxford Dictionary definition of Confident:
feeling or showing certainty about something, self-assured
Why Humbly Confident is Core
Humble? The work I’m doing is important but it’s not all about me and my self-importance. Yes, I have a vision for a successful coaching / EOS Implementer practice … but I’m truly excited about what the great companies I’m helping can do when they create a healthy team, get traction and execute with discipline and accountability to achieve their vision!
Confident? The EOS model is comprehensive and simple at the same time. I’m confident because I see it working for my clients and for thousands of others who are implementing EOS! I’m confident in my ferocious pursuit of helping entrepreneurial businesses to succeed!
Here’s to the development of Humble Confidence as a part of your “Level-5” leadership!
